Marketing has never had more ways to create content, reach people, or automate execution. And yet earning genuine attention, and keeping people’s trust, has rarely been harder.

Earned, Not Bought is a publication for marketing leaders navigating that tension.

It explores how AI, authentic content, customer advocacy, social media, and new operating models are changing the way brands are built. The focus is not on chasing every new tool or trend. It is on understanding what these changes mean for the people responsible for real brands, real customers, and real business outcomes.

What you’ll find here

Expect practical perspectives on:

  • AI and the future of marketing
  • Authentic and authenticated content
  • Brand governance and accountability
  • UGC, creators, customers, and communities
  • Social media and content operations
  • The changing role of marketing leadership
  • Building systems that earn attention instead of simply buying it

Some pieces will examine major industry developments. Others will come from conversations with CMOs, marketing operators, customers, agencies, and the teams doing the work every day.

The goal is simple: every article should give you a useful idea, a clearer way to understand a problem, or a framework you can bring into your next meeting.

Why “Earned, Not Bought”?

Paid distribution can buy an impression.

It cannot guarantee attention, credibility, advocacy, or trust.

As AI makes content nearly infinite, the experiences and recommendations of real people become more valuable—not less. The brands that win will not simply produce more or spend more. They will build systems that give people something worth believing, sharing, and participating in.

That is the territory this publication explores.

About Runbin

I’m Runbin Dong, founder and CEO of Scale Social AI.

I spend much of my time working with enterprise marketing leaders who are under pressure to produce more content, move faster, adopt AI, prove performance, and protect the brand—all at once.

Again and again, I hear versions of the same aspiration:

“I want to be the orchestrator, not the executor.”

This publication is where I work through what that transition actually requires—what AI should handle, what it should never replace, and how marketing organizations can scale without losing the human truth at the center of the brand.

Earned, Not Bought reflects my own perspective, informed by the people and organizations I have the privilege of learning from. It is published independently and is not intended to be a stream of Scale Social product announcements.
